Why Living in a Mushroom House is Amazing

If you have $1.2M to spend on a house and lot would you choose to live in a mushroom?

I am not kidding! Would you live inside of the mushroom house, because I would. This house is amazing! And the best part is it's real!

On 4949 Allan Road, Bethesda, Maryland a very amusing home is for sale known as The Mushroom House of Bethesda!

This fantastic house is owned by Edward and Frances Garfinkle, a couple with whimsical nature. They bought the property in 1967, then a few years later decided a do over the property with the help of a futuristic architect, Roy Mason.

The renovation took 3 years to be completed.

More than a giant mushroom, the Garfinkles regard their home as a giant thermos bottle. In spite of having a 30-foot high ceiling, the house remains well insulated thanks to the polyurethane foam coating they used to hide the original stucco exterior.

The mushroom house has become a peculiar landmark in a rather monotonous neighborhood. According to Edward, “most people looking at it from the outside think it’s a very dark house, but it’s anything but dark. There’s a pond inside the house and skylights. It’s very bright and cheerful.”

In 2006, the house was featured in Weird Maryland, a book by Matt Lake.

It was coined the mushroom house due to its appearance. While they never intended for it to look like a mushroom, the name never the less stuck. The Garfinkle's are hoping that the name will help them sell the property.

The Garfinkle's have decided to sell the house due to an uneeded amount of space. Their kids are all grown and have moved out of the house.

The property is priced at $1.2 million. At 3,700 square feet, this house has 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, living room, kitchen and a dining area.

“One good thing is that it probably slows the traffic down on our street. The cars don’t go flying by as much as in the rest of the neighborhood. It’s better than a speed bump.” – Edward Garfinkle
